Artificial weathering of an ordinary chondrite: Recommendations for the curation of Antarctic meteorites

Meteorites are prone to errestrial weathering not only after their fall on the Earth’s surface but also during storage in museum collections. To study susceptibility of this material weathering, experiments were carried out polished sections H5 chondrite Asuka 10177. The consisted four 100-days cycles which temperature and humidity varied a twelve hours basis. first alteration cycle changing from 15 25 °C; second modifying both 35 45% °C, respectively; third varying level 40 60%; fourth maintained fixed high 80%. Weathering products resulting identified characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy Raman spectroscopy. Such observed at microscopic scale alteration. Conversely, typical corrosion meteoritic FeNi metal microscope surveys all subsequent cycles. Important increases distribution samples 2 4 3, suggesting that combination fluctuations or (>60%) alone is most detrimental chondritic samples. Chemistry revealed degree with limited contribution troilite corrosion. No clear evidence mafic silicate was cycles, postretrieval remains lesser extent troilite.
